And this gives me lots of practice for all my short, easy thoughts: Turn left at the light. Bring a sweater. Add salt. I return again and again to the same irresolvable questions as I attempt to share my life with another person, to be a good daughter, to be an artist. These slow thoughts often catch me unawares, while turning left or adding salt. I am startled, almost insulted to be reminded of my own depths: This is unnecessary! I’m doing fine! I remembered to bring a sweater! Books hold a place inside of me for the long thoughts. And they also taught me how to think like that in the first place. Their slow cadence, the commitment and silence they require, the way they endure over generations—these are not easy qualities to locate in the world, or in myself. And the best part is, unlike most roads to the unknown, books aren’t conjured by prayer or devotion: They’re real, they’re cheap, and they make a sound when you drop them."

It's 2012. New Years Resolutions abound and aplenty. Peoples are trying to better themselves and their lives. The cynic in me would like to scoff at this notion and the dreamer in me would like to think that we should always be trying to better ourselves, not just because another year has past.

Anyways, I was reading a post on the brilliant, My New Roots about a 21 day cleanse for January. Sarah (from 'My New Roots') is a holistic nutritionist and a vegetarian chef and the real kicker is...her recipes are freekin' delish. For realisies. So I'm trying to undertake this small task of nourishing my body with some healthy eats.

Here are some of my tasty & healthy triumphs so far, thanks to the lovely Sarah:

The Brownie Bake-off Challenge of 2011! Except, I am the only baker, the competitors be the very recipe's themselves.

A few weeks ago I was having brownie cravings and I wanted to know once and for all what exactly my feelings were on the matter (a very serious matter indeed). What constitutes a good brownie? Should it be fudgy & dense? Or rather, cakey with a nice crumb? Is cocoa powder the key element or chocolate itself?

I enlisted the help of my gorgeous friend, Liz and armed with a truck load of butter and chocolate (including a single origin chocolate & dark cocoa from Monsieur Truffe) we broke out the mixing bowls and spatulas.

Here are the contenders:

1. Julia Child's Best Brownies Ever

2. Raw Brownies from My New Roots

3. Baked NYC's Original Brownie

"Best Brownie Ever"

First of all, I couldn't NOT make this brownie...with the incomparable Julia at the helm, I had more than couverture & luck on my side; I had the genius of Childs.

The Adjudication

L.L (lovely liz): Still a little 'goopy' in the middle. Not too sweet, crunchy top, flavour plus. 7.5/10

The Frockette: Not overly sweet, rich fudgy centre, cracked surface but soft crumb texture 7/10

"Raw Brownie"
I thought it would be remiss of me not to include a healthier option, so when I stumbled upon this recipe whilst perusing the uber healthy & excellent blog, My New Roots; I new I had to try it. Its only sweet ingredient is Medjool dates (which in other news, is also an uber delicious foodstuff) and it is bound together by cocoa and nuts!

The Adjudication

L.L: Only a hint of date flavour, good texture, not as indulgent as the others, more of a healthy treat. 6/10

The Frockette: a lil bitter, more of a fudge than a brownie, walnuts add an earthiness, a human error on our behalf...needs more Dates! (for sweetness) 5.5/10

L.L: This chewy, sweet, consistent brownie is rocking my world. addition of sea salt is a win! 8.5/10

The Frockette: ...they're f**king good. Salty. A decent crumb with a dense, chocolate centre. Cocoa is the way to go go 8.5/10

I recall being terribly engrossed in some novella on the way home one day, and suddenly feeling a yanking sensation on my head. No doubt (wherever you are in the world) you woud've have seen the news headlines about flash flooding & inland tsunami in Queensland, Australia. 75% of the state has been declared a disaster zone with 9 people dead and 59 missing. So many have lost their homes & all possessions. My own family are faced with the possibility of having to evacuate and find higher, safer ground.

Here are some things that frocked my world in 2010:

The frockette’s 2010 Twenty.

1. Scored a wonderful trip to Singapore to attend Fashion Week.

2. Baked often, my favourite recipe being a vegan spiced pumpkin bread. It was awesome.

3. Won a Helpmann Award in September.

4. Flew to Japan twice and became completely enamoured with it.

5. Made some excellent new friends.

6. Spent more time with my dearest old friends.

7. Packed all my belongings & life into boxes in 3 days.

8. Boarded a lot of airplanes. Around 23 flights all up maybe? Also, developed a weird fear of planes turning. I think it was an equilibrium thing.

9. Went to an Ashram and sang Kirtans’ with Swamis’.

10. Went to a Temple and prayed with Monks’ at 6am.

11. Cried for a week straight.

12. Became more addicted to coffee, most specifically Cold Drip. I blame this on Proud Mary.

13. Discovered and fell in love with Radiolab.

14. Heard the breaking of many hearts (it sounded like static and the popping of rice bubbles).

15. Listened heavily to Leonard Cohen (perhaps contributing to broken heartedness?)

16. Confirmed my love for Reformer Pilates.

17. Went to a Tupperware Party. For real.

18. Developed serious night owl tendencies. 3am bed time? Completely normal!

19. Drank cider. (Pear is my favourite).

20. Blogged for the entire year. It’s my bloggerversary.

I enjoy wearing a Yukata. I like the lightness of the fabric, the patterns, the shape, ect. If you stay in a Ryokan in Japan, a Yukata is usually provided. Which explains the common occurrence of silly samurai/geisha poses in many tourist's snapshots (which i may or may not have in my photo album). I think it's a garment I might start circulating in my daily repertoire. Yukata wa suki des!

The streets of Tokyo are littered with streets signs denoting cafes, salons, clothing stores, you name it. They are numerous, bold, whimsical and yes- perhaps, some of them are a little lost in translation but nevertheless, they catch the eye. I delight in my daily dose of Japanese signage.

A couple of nights ago I ate a spectacular dinner, one of the best meals of my life. It wasn't at a Michelin starred or chef hatted restaurant nor was it trendy, faddish, fusion or any other food buzz word. It was honest, fresh, simple yet elegant and a vegetarian's dream; it was Shojin Ryori (devotion cuisine) at a temple in the mountains.

I spent a night at Shojoshin-in, a temple run by warm and accommodating monks in Koyasan. It was an unforgettable experience and I am so very glad to have had a glimpse into Shingon Buddhism. And to have eaten this stellar meal...

I saw Leonard Cohen live in concert last night and fell deeper in love with his songs and sentiments (and the man himself!) than I thought possible. He was as sharply dressed and well spoken as ever, he skipped around the stage with vitality, sang on bended knee and wore his heart on his sleeve with every verse he sang (for almost 3 hours). Did I mention that he is 76 years old? It was moving and inspiring and a rare sight to behold. He even performed some 'new' songs, yet to be released on a studio album. And since you all couldn't be there, I thought I'd share one with you:

Hello reader, meet an important figure from my childhood. No - not Robocop, the other one. That's right, I'm talking about 80's cartoon pop sensation; Jem. She was the leader of the Holograms and I wanted to be her. Now, I would settle for just her hair do; a wild mane of cotton candy coloured locks. Truly. Outrageous.

An animated pink coiff is something to be desired but I sense your uncertainty. You're wondering if the look would translate to pure sassiness in the flesh? Affirmative.

I love Polaroids but don't have a camera anymore or 600 film. What a sob story. However, I do have my eye on the new Polaroid 300 instant camera. The images look quite sharp and it's so compact.

These are my geek chic glasses i procured from a little shop in Harajuku. When i wear them I like to pretend I'm Diane Keaton (circa Annie Hall) and talk endlessy of my neurosis and drink lots of coffee. This 'glasses persona' is different to me how? Caffeine jacked up, over analytical behaviour is akin to me already. Oh dear.

They meet at night, in silence, for the tacit agreement of emergency love.

The act begins.

The walls clamour for the valour of her moans;

They are night birds.

Never more familiar and removed from one another.

Fingers tug and rip at buttons, seams, any obstacle in the way of flesh.

Silence remains.

Words would only mar this magnificent duet.

Just touch; the urgency of the ephemeral love is understood.

Let me introduce you to my Aunty Jenny and Uncle Peter. That's them in 1966, a pretty spiffy looking couple, don't you think? They lived and travelled the world together. They never had any children of their own but loved doting on their favourite nieces and nephews (i.e. one spoilt, little Frockette). They had each other and that was ~~enough~~, that was everything.

They've both passed on now, taken by cancer. Peter was diagnosed first and Jennifer nursed him until she herself was tragically diagnosed and degenerated quickly. She passed away first in 2007. My uncle didn't last too much longer in this world without her. He was known to carry her ashes around with him wherever he went; riding in the car, out to dinner at restaurants, her urn always close by. He was still trying to experience the world with her by his side. That really blew me away, his constancy and dedication to her. I thought 'Wow, that is real love".

Cancer claimed his life within a year of her passing but i think he died of a broken heart. Their devotion to each other was encompassing, their love is their legacy. Jenny and Peter; so beloved.

My mouth, therefore an error. Plush safe.. he think.
